About 3 or 4 centuries ago, some farms were built in a vast plain near the river Po. One is the 'Cascina Rubattino'. An almost perfectly square area is enclosed by a high wall of layered stones and bricks on 3 sides and some buildings on the remaining side. The buildings are turned inwards towards a courtyard and a garden with meadows, fruit and bamboo trees. The new housing is carefully integrated in the historical structures. The old has been clearly expressed as old, the new as new. The restored back wall - almost an archeological fragment - is a key element in the new project as well, giving great unity to the whole complex.

Tre o quattro secoli fa, alcune cascine sono state costruite in una vasta area pianeggiante lentamente degradante verso il Po, e una di queste è la Cascina Rubattino. Il complesso occupa un'area quasi perfettamente quadrata, completamente circondata da un alto muro di ciotoli intervallati a mattoni su 3 lati, e da alcuni edifici sul lato rimanente. Gli edifici sono rivolti internamente verso il cortile e un giardino con una zona a prato e alberi da frutto e bambu. Le nuove abitazioni sono perfettamente integrate nelle strutture storiche. Il vecchio è stato chiaramente espresso come vecchio, il nuovo come nuovo. Il muro posteriore restaurato è un elemento chiave anche del nuovo progetto, e conferisce grande unità all'intero complesso.
