Space is an expensive commodity and the reality for many hoteliers today is that they have to provide the best possible guest experience within the smallest possible space. Reflecting this, ReardonSmith is this year challenging students of architecture and design across Europe to create a hotel bedroom and bathroom that will provide a very comfortable, well- functioning environment within a very compact foot plate.
A typical 2-rooms unit is only 4.3 m x 2.3 m wide, so each room’s area is less than 5 sq m. Available floor space is maximised by stacking one bed on top of another, much like in usual bunk beds except here each bed is in a different room. A special curved bathroom wall further increases floor space usage, as it allows a wider area only where it’s needed, i.e. in front of the door and window. This wall includes cloth storage area and all entertainment/ modern IT devices - namely, a 12" flat screen and stereo speakers which may be used for both tv/radio and internet connection, through a wireless keyboard. Seen from the other side, the curved wall perfectly accomodates all bathroom furniture within a minimal footprint. A circular window allows natural ventilation and daylight to the bathroom too, while carefully integrating in the main window design. Below the circular window there’s space for luggage.

Una tipica unità di 2 camere è solo 4.3 m x 2.3 m, quindi l'area di una camera è meno di 5 m². Lo spazio disponibile è massimizzato sovrapponendo un letto sull'altro, come nei normali letti a castello tranne che qui ogni letto è in una camera divers. Una speciale parete curva del bagno aumenta ulteriormente l'utilizzo dello spazio, in quanto permette un'area più ampia solo dove c'è bisogno, cioè di fronte alla porta e alla finestra. Questo muro include un armadio e tutte le apparecchiature audio/video e informatiche - precisamente, uno schermo piatto 12" e speaker stereo che possono essere utilizzati sia per tv/radio che per la connessione a internet, tramite una tastiera wireless. Vista dall'altro lato, la parete curva include perfettamene tutti gli arredi del bagno in uno spazio minimo. Una finestra ad oblò permette la ventilazione e illuminazione naturale anche del bagno, integrandosi con cura nel disegno della vetrata. Sotto alla finestra circolare c'è spazio per i bagagli.
